I have been a big fan of Firefox from rather quite a long time (tracing it roots back to Phoenix 0.5 close to 3 years ago when I test drove the version on Linux). One of the coolest features of Firefox are Extensions which allows the community to add features that they want to the Browser making it a browser for everyone.
Everyone perhaps has their list of favorite extesions, here is mine :
- Adblock – To filter out all those irritating, eye-sote graphic ads from web sites
- Tabbrowser preferences – A simple powertool to get the best out of Firefox’s Tabbed browsing feature. Must have, no two ways about it.
- PDF Download – For all those PDF files … download it, view as HTML or view in browser … take your pick
- IE View – As long as there are crazy websites that refuse to work well with Firefox, you will still need this high risk tool called Internet Explorer. Here’s a quick way to view the transgressing page in IE
- Disable target for downloads – For those downloads that force open a new window / tab. Use this one to block that irritating act
- del.icio.us – If you dig del.icio.us, the online bookmarking service, this is a must have. Tagging and adding bookmarks is really simple with this one
- LiveLines – I use this all the time to add RSS feeds to my Feed reader (Bloglines). Adding feeds is as simple as 1 & 2 clicks
- FoxClocks – To keep track of the current time in other cities around the world, where work requires me to interact with people in
- Google Toolbar for Firefox – Well ! Not much to say regarding ‘Why’ you need this. One good thing with this one is that you can use the customize toolbar layout option and pull the Searbox on top (along with the Menu and thus save height of the screen)
- Download Manager Tweak – Because I’d prefer my Download manager window to open in a new Tab rather than as a popup
- Screen Grab – Havn’t found a better (& Free) way to take screen shots (not just of the visible window, but also entire web pages)
- Greasemonkey – Popularly described as the ‘Swiss Army Knife’ of all extensions. A must, must have. No 2 ways about that (A seperate post on Must Have Greasemonkey scripts will follow later)
- BugMeNot – For those pesky websites that want you to register and login … use this one to sneak in through
- How’d I get here – This is my newest extension and thus dont have much to vouch for. Checking it out for now for utility and value

Finally, the folks at Google seem to have managed to port Gmail to a Mobile version
I checked it out this morning using my Blackberry and must say that I am glad to see it. This has been a long standing user need from Gmail and now that it has arrived, it is a real cool and neat way for me to access my mails on the go
Also came across a views feature wherein you can select the Labels that you want to see on the Gmail mobile interface
Also, looks like they have implemented a keyboard shortcuts kinda hack, eg., press 0 to go to the inbox etc, but this did not work on my Blackberry

I think it was yesterday or maybe the day before when I was doing my daily ritual of running through RSS feeds using Bloglines when I came across Om Mailk’s Blog and what I saw drove me crazy
Here it was, a blog from a man I respect for his knowledge of the Broadband and VoIP tech & business and here is his RSS feed with a dirty & huge graphic banner ad from Citibank in every posting. Gawd ! it looked ugh !!!
I wondered … has Om mailk gone bananas ???
Fortunately, I didnt rave or rant but just about ignored it with a feeling at the back of my mind that I aint gonna click on any of those and if this goes in, I’m gonna unsubscribe form his blog
Fortunately, it was a Snafu as Om admits it and everything is OK and fixed now
Thank god for that

One does understand that the average Firefox user is certainly more savvy than the typical IE user and hence may not get lured into clicking on random ads that jump at you, but am rather surprised to see the level of usage the AdBlock extension in Firefox (based on the comments in Digg)
Anyways, does this mean that Google-like Text only ads are the way to go for online advertising ?
