A Rough guide to getting Sify Broadband to work with the Linksys WRT54G Wi-Fi Broadband router

December 6th, 2005

Here is a quick guide to getting your Wi-Fi enabled laptop with Sify Broadband using the Linksys WRT54G Broadband Wi-Fi router

  • Connect the incoming Sify Broadband LAN cable to the Internet port on the Router
  • Connect the LAN port on your PC and and one of the LAN ports on the Router with a CAT5 cable
  • Connect the router to a Power socket
  • Fire up your browser and navigate to http://192.168.1.1 (username : WRT54G, password : admin)
  • In the web-based configuration interface choose the following :

Internet setup
Internet connection type : Static IP (Enter the Private IP provided by Sify and the rest of the Network details as per your network eg., my default gateway is 10.10.175.1, Subnet mask is 255.255.255.128, DNS 202.144.66.6, 202.144.115.4)
Leave every thing else on this page as default & save your settings (I made no changes to DDNS, Mac address clone and Advanced routing)

Wireless tab
Network mode : Mixed
Set your own SSID name
the rest is default

Wireless security - WEP
enter your own passphrase and generate the keys (note then somewhere, you will need to use these when you connect wireless using your laptop)

I have also enabled a MAC address filter and allowed only my laptop to prevent others in my neighbourhood from free-loading on my connection

Everything else is default !!!

Do this and you are good to go … leave a comment here if you face any issues :-)

    Hi!

Don’t u need to keyin a login and password ;-)
BTW, what protocol does Sify use to authenticate?

You need to login using Sify BB’s client

    They use a non-standard protocol :-(

    Hi,

    - I configured the above settings on the LinkSys Wi-Fi router except for the Wireless tab settings.

    - I have connected a Wi-Fi adapter (from Netgear) to the USB port as I am trying to connect Wi-Fi using a desktop PC.

    - The Wi-Fi client coming with the Wi-Fi USB adapter is able to detect the Wi-Fi network but is not able to connect to it. I get the error as ‘Validate Settings’.

    - Another thing, in the settings you have mentioned, there is no talk of the username/password required to log into SIFY. Does this have to be configured on the Wi-Fi router?

    - What should the settings on my PC be? I removed the static IP address/Gateway/DNS configuration on my PC, which are configured for Sify broadband. I had configured the IP address of 192.168.1.100 on my PC and the gateway address as 192.168.1.1.

    Please advise????

Let me put down a few thoughts on what you can check :

    * are you able to ping the wi-fi router (which would be the default gateway IP from the laptop) ?
    * are you able to access the router’s web-based admin screen from the laptop ?
    * what kind of wireless security is configured on the router (WEP / WPA) etc ?
    * if there is any of the above, you will need to enter the key for that in your wireless LAN settings on your laptop
    * reg the sify bb uname/pwd, you still have to use the sify client on the laptop to connect to net
    * the settings on the PC are fine (DHCP I assume). you need to put the Private IP that sify gave you and configure the wi-fi router (as static ip)
    * you can check if your router is configured OK on the Sify network by trying to ping the default gateway of the sify network (the on that would have been the default gateway on your PC before you setup the router) from the router

Yes i have tried all these steps, the computer is pinging upto the router but i cannot connect to the internet……If i use the BB client..its telling me to enter valid ip address provided by sify…its not acceptiong the automatic ip..
What should i do now ?
    Please advise me.

    Cheers

    Hey Badri

Are you referring to Mac Address ?
Call the Sify Call center ask them to add your Laptop’s Wirelss adaptor’s MAC address in their backend and bind it to your username

You can find the mac address by running ipconfig /all at the command prompt

I am also trying to configure the netgear wireless router for SIFY broadband connection. I have connected the internet cable to the router. I have connected the router and my laptop through another cable. When I click on the Sify’s client, its not opening citing the reason that it could not detect the connection. Can you guide me in detail how will I connect to the router configuration page.

Oh, by the way, there’s still one minor problem.

For those who want to setup their network such that they can use the Sify Broadband connection over the wireless network without having to turn on one specific computer in their network just to login, there’s still not much relief.

Because the Sify client still has to be run on a client computer to actually enable the internet connection, the MAC address of the computer that runs it is still sent to Sify servers for verification at the time of login. So, you may only login from a computer whose MAC you’ve already registered with Sify. This also explains why Hawkeye didn’t have to use the MAC cloning on his router. The router’s MAC is not sent since the Sify client is run on the computer and not on the router.

And since each network adapter (whether ethernet, bluetooth or WiFi) on your computer has a separate MAC address, you need to make sure that the MAC registered with Sify is that of the correct adapter. For example if previously you were using your desktop’s ethernet adapter to connect to Sify, the MAC of that would have been naturally registered with them.

So, once you start using your wireless router to share the internet connection, you should make sure that your desktop is still connected to the router through the same LAN/ethernet card, and through any other network adapter like a wireless adapter or another LAN card on the same computer.

Once you’ve logged in from the computer with the registered MAC, you’re good to go. You may use the internet on all of the computers in your network.

There is minor relief, however. This setup still works great for people who only have two computers in their network. Sify will allow you to register upto two MACs with them. Apparently they realize that people can have more than one computer. But, two is where they draw the line. Silly!

To take maximum advantage of these two MAC slots, call sify and register the MAC addresses of the appropriate ntework cards (Wireless or LAN) of the two main computers you will be using to acess the internet most frequently. At least one of these should preferably be a desktop that is commonly accessible to everyone who uses the network. This I’m saying so that you don’t have to go looking for someone’s poersonal laptop in order to start the internet connection.

The other computers on your network will still have to be dependant upon these two computers to help them start the internet connection.

Good luck! I don’t check this message board. But, I’ll try to see back for the next couple of days to answer any questions anyone might have about what I’ve said.

This was a very good and informative article. It worked great for me. I was kind off hopless and was planning to change my Broadband service provider i.e. Sify to some other where MAC addresses are not tied by the service provider.

I have Lynksys Broadband 2.4 Ghz router and its working extremely well with Sify Broadband. Once again thanks Hawkeye and Sushant for your work and suggestions.

may be it is not the right place but i wish to share my experience with sify broadband. got this sify thing today. some notes:

    a. this bb client app is has to run on my pc without anyone knowing what actually it is doing?? (anyone?)
    b. when my pc is down i cant use the my sify ip on other system.!!!
    c. cant use my router to connect to internet.

i tell you what, that way vsnl is too good. i use “smc barricade” router with wlan and builtin ADSL modem at home. the rj11 cable goes in the router. connect router (once) and configure the ISP/user/pass settings etc and bingo. my home is turned into wireless internet with just powering on the router. i guess i need to discard the sify connection and get vsnl in my office too.

    regards
    harry69in at yahoo.com

ps: bloody, my local isp “hotwire” (with web based login) is better than sify, atleast everything is transparent to me.

hi, That was good piece of information. one question I still have that howdo I see which MAC Addresses are registered with SIFY ? And how can I change them ? Do I have to call up the customer care or can I do it from some web interface.

    Thanks in advance

You’ll have to call them to get the MAC address changed

    Hi all

I think its too late for this comment as the disscussion seems to be closed.
But if anyone comes to this place may this peace be of some help too.

    My story:
As agarwal has said the solution works for two PCs(mac address). But we got three laptops. we tried everything and then we decided to use mac changer (MacMakeUp or gentle mac) and now whenever I, the third guy whose mac is not binded with ip, has to start the sify connection in absence of the too I change my mac to thier mac and then use the net. When they come they use my mac. and like wise.

    This works.

Chief, I have a sify broadband connection and a Netgear MR 814 WiFi router …am breaking my head with Sify cusomter care on trying to share with one desktop, 2 laptops. Would be great if you can give me some directions …for MAC … can I use the MAC spoofing feature? That way the Router will emulate the MAC of the PC i use to configure which is registered with Sify. Will I need to run the SifyBB client from the PC I need to log on the net?

Would be great if you can help

    Hawkeye,

Seeing the posts you have written, I assume that you seem to be technically sound in these aspects. I hope that the knowledge you have is more than sufficient to solve my problem. I have a laptop (WiFi Enabled) and Sify BB connection (256Kbps) at my place. All I want is a wireless connectivity with which I will be able to access internet sitting anywhere at my place without plugging the Sify cable to my laptop. This is my requirement. Can you please send me an email on how to do it. My email id is sasridh@gmail.com.

    Greetings,
    Sandeep.

    @ateeq

If you are referring to the WEP/WPA key, then that is something that is configured in the Wi-Fi access point
If this is your own Wi-Fi router, then you should be able to login into the router (most probably at 192.168.1.1) and the security key would be available in the Wireless security settings

Hello all, This forum is of gr8 help. But somehow it didnot work for me.

Could anybody please tell me clearly what should be enter where explicitly.
Like someone use term pc someone laptop. Please be clear so that i and some other needy person who may be layman can configure. i have called sify BB customer care and they are nopt ready to send a technical assitant at my place infact they are ready to cut the connection if i dont want.

I am helpless. I need to configure.

Plz tell me the whole procedure clearly.

    1) What to enter in “static ip” (first field of router page 192.168.1.1)
    2) 2nd is clear i.e subnet mask (255.255.255.0)
    3) what to print in “start ip” (3rd field on the same page)

    and so on…

    Laptop’s setting
    1) ip address
    2) gateway

Dont worry about mac binding. i have “SMAC” thorough which i can change mac address easily as i have been doing for years since i have used my sify internet on different dekstops (i.e different lan card)

    Thanks in advance

    Please help
