The Long Tail wags … & it wags hard

May 24th, 2005

Among the concepts that have emerged in the recent past in the realm of Management & Marketing the one that I believe will have the largest impact on way Business is done is the concept of Long Tail

To put it simply, The Long Tail concept states that in a Brick & Mortar world, Distribution and Shelf space being limited commodities forced marketers to back a few small number of Hits which are mass market products pruchased by a large number of users, thus enabling a self-sustaining Economies of Scale based Production and Marketing strategy

However, with the proliferation of the Internet and the rise of E-Commerce giants such as Amazon and eBay as well as vertical stores such as iTunes, these players have managed to give those hitherto unknown and unstockable products which have a nichce market a very big chance of being discovered and sold, since these Virtual players are not constrained in the manner that their offline equivalents are

This is the Long tail of the market which has now got the chance to wag & wag it will hard

In essence, this is Say’s law in practise – “Supply creates its own Demand”

On being a Veggie in Japan

May 24th, 2005

Over the poast couple of weeks, any discussions with Friends & Family on my impending Japan trip has been highlighted largely by the fact that being a Veggie I would have to faces numerous troubles in getting things to eat in Japan !

Given my pre-disposed notion of Japan, China and other countries in the Far east being places wherein Animals of all shapes, sizes and number of legs are consumed with delight by the locals (talk about a snake’s eye and other such ‘delicacies’ (sic!))

One thing’s for sure, I need to learn the Japanese word for Vegetarian and stock up on things like MTR ready to heat & eat stuff along with my Yoghurt supplies & Fruits out there

In case you know of a decent Veggie joint in Yokohama, leave that in the comment :-)

On seeing the world and other such stories …

May 23rd, 2005

A lot has happened between my last post & now …

This saturday, I am off for now first ever trip outside of India to Yokohama, Japan for the Broadband World Forum Asia 2005 conference where I hope to rub shoulders with the movers and shakers of the Broadband World and come back a man much more wiser !

I would be transiting through Singapore and would get to spend a day on the way to Tokyo and a night on the way back. I have been rather despoly trying to figure out the places to visit in Singapore and Tokyo and in case you know of any must see places please do leave it here as a comment

After much effort & confusion, the Singapore and Japan visas have been stamped and I now start my countdown to the weekend

The other big thing happening in my life is that myWife and I are going to be making a trip to the United Kingdom in the 2nd half of June. We’d be visting my wife’s brother Deepak & sis-in-law Kamini in London and would be spending 18 days there. The highlights would be day @ Wimbledon, the Tsunami Relief Cricket match @ Lord’s, trips to Costwolds, Cornwall, Wales, Lake District & Scotland

We were very keen to do Paris & Amsterdam also, but the screwsups and delays with the Japanese visa meant that I didnt have enough time to get my Schengen visa stamped

So much for travelling the world and all those kinda of things …
If there is something / someplace that you want me to visit in these places, pl do leave a comment
